Winning 8 out of 9 Tours de France put Johan in an unmatched class of championship coaches. After the 2007 season, in which he won the Tour with his latest phenom, Alberto Contador, Johan embarked on a new challenge taking over the General Manager position of the troubled Astana Cycling Team.
Johan’s leadership, values and management strategy quickly established the new Astana Cycling Team as one of the most successful and professionally managed organizations in the sport. In this position, Johan oversees all aspects of the Team business, as well as 30 riders and 35 staff members, representing over 20 nationalities. He is also responsible for carrying out the Team’s mission – to foster Kazakhstan pride and develop the next generation of Kazakh riders.

What is Astana?

Team Astana is named after the capital of cycling-enthused Kazakhstan,
which is located in Central Asia and is the intersection of major transportation routes,
cultural, economic, social and ideological links between Europe and Asia, between the East and West!

Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador, Levi Leipheimer … Just a small sample of the riders that Johan has developed into great champions. Johan’s commitment to developing top cyclists doesn’t stop with his ProTour winning cycling teams. His international cycling academy provides training and racing opportunities to young talented riders, who seek an alternate path to reach the pro-peloton.
With homes in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Belgium, JBCA members not only learn from some of the top coaches in the sport, but are instilled with Johan’s winning philosophy, leading to champions on AND off the bike.

It’s not often that we use the word “dynasty”, but Johan’s “We Might as Well Win” master plan that he shared with Lance in 1999 ignited the most victorious sports franchise in cycling history. Over the next seven years, the Discovery Channel and USPS Teams won an unprecedented 10 Grand Tours (8 Tours de France, 1 Giro d’Italia, 1 Vuelta a Espana), dominated the major US races, and stood on the top step throughout Europe and Asia. Seeing, instinctively feeling and planning the race from the driver’s seat, Johan directed cyclists into champions. Armstrong, Contador, Hincapie, Leipheimer - Just a few past and current riders who achieved legendary status under Johan. If you’ve ever dreamed of racing up Alp d’Huez or leading the peloton on the Champs-Élysées, you most certainly envisioned yourself riding for Johan’s “blue train” team. A team that will always be remembered for not only what they achieved, but how – with hard work, class and professionalism. To explore this dynasty, please visit The Paceline
